Woman's Hour

20/04/2009

Woman's Hour with Jane Garvey. Including: The new president of the Girls' Schools Association, Jill Berry, joins Jane to discuss why she thinks girls thrive in a single-sex environment. The thought of delivering a speech to an expectant audience strikes fear into many of us. Jane discusses the art of public speech and why men are sometimes perceived to be better at it than women. She is joined by Tony Blair's former chief-strategist, Matthew Taylor, mentor on BBC2's The Speaker Kate Silverton, and Jill Berry, president of the Girls' Schools Association. Jane also hears about the women in Afghanistan who have been risking their own safety by taking to the streets to protest against a new law that critics say essentially legalises rape within marriage. Plus a look at new research into the over-consumption of alcohol by women during pregnancy.
