Welford Primary school in Handsworth, Birmingham, is in one of the most racially tense areas in Britain. But the school itself is thriving. There are pupils from 17 different ethnic backgrounds and few white British. Headmaster Chris believes in integration, and encourages the children to celebrate each other's festivals. But a shooting down the road reminds everyone of the realities outside their gates. Filmed over the autumn term. For related archive programmes visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/white.
