Huey continues to champion the brightest new talent in alternative music by meeting Californian songstress Jesca Hoop. Championed by both Tom Waits (for whom she once nannied) and fellow 6Music DJ Guy Garvey, who loved one of her tracks so much he invited her to support Elbow on tour, Jesca Hoop released her sophomore album last November to great critical acclaim. 'Hunting My Dress' saw her heaped with comparisons to Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Bat For Lashes and CocoRosie but her off-kilter rhythms, playful and surprising song-writing and swooping melodies are all her own. Jesca has a background as interesting as her music. Brought up within a strict Mormon family in Southern California, well versed in the folk musical tradition, Jesca travelled around Arizona working within youth rehabilitation before her famous nannying stint and taking up song-writing seriously. One of her demos was picked up by LA alternative music taste-maker Nic Harcourt on KCRW in 2005 and she subsequently performed at SXSW before releasing her 'Kismet Acoustic' EP. 'Hunting My Dress' marks Jesca's arrival as a serious contender and in the midst of her UK tour she talks to Huey about her song-writing, what prompted a recent move from California to the sun-shy Manchester and her eclectic background. Huey also spins a selection of his favourite records from rock to punk, reggae, rap, soul and blues, Idris Elba kindly Shares and Cares one of his favourite records and Huey invites the listeners to indulge their Vinyl Fetish by putting needle on the record to a pick from the vast BBC record library.
