Catherine Bott reflects on the life, poetry and music of the Elizabethan/Jacobean London-based physician Thomas Campion. He was as celebrated for his poems as for his many songs, and his most famous piece is considered to be Never Weather-Beaten Saile, which was familiar as a hymn for many years after his death. Campion's legacy of love songs and a large collection of poetry and pamphlets on music and literature, as well as his many masques, have made him an important figure in the history of Renaissance art, even if he is perhaps less well-known than his contemporary John Dowland. The programme includes a wide selection of recordings of Campion's music alongside readings from his poetry and his masques.
