Bold and moving epic depicting the Roman Catholic church at a time of great political tension. From his ordination as a priest in 1917, Stephen Fermoyle rises through the church to become a cardinal on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. During the ceremony, he casts his mind back over the personal and professional conflicts of his life, including abortion, racism and the evil of Hitler.
