The Big Performance - Episode 5

Ten shy children who love to sing but are terrified of performing in public are put through their paces by choirmaster extraordinaire Gareth Malone. Having already worked his magic on a tone-deaf town, reluctant schoolboys and wayward teenagers, Gareth attempts to build the youngsters' fragile confidence and turn them into singing stars capable of performing in front of a massive crowd - 40,000 people at London's Proms in the Park. It is Howard's turn in the solo spotlight as the Big Performance tour bus pulls up in Warwickshire. Local boy Howard has Tourette's syndrome and always feels self-conscious performing in front of anyone, so Gareth tries to banish these feelings of insecurity once and for all by challenging Howard to sing solo in front of a cafe full of strangers. The group head to Birmingham to tackle a brand new style of music, electro pop. Gareth takes them back to the eighties as they attempt to sing La Roux's recent hit In for the Kill. Top Radio 1 DJ Tom Deacon pays them a visit and gives them some advice, and they get to work on making their very own music track. But will they be able to impress the audience? With their Big Performance at Proms in the Park getting ever closer, Gareth has invited Stephen Maddock, chief executive of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, to critique their performance. Stephen was one of the administrators involved in setting up Proms in the Park - will he agree that Gareth's young singers are ready to take to the big stage, or does Gareth have his work cut out yet again?
