PD James published her first book in 1963 and has been a bestseller ever since. Her fourteen crime novels featuring Adam Dalgliesh took the conventions of the detective novel as established by Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie but moved the genre towards the literary novel giving each of her characters depth of character and motivation not seen before.
