See Hear - Series 28 - Cochlear Update

This week See Hear celebrates the twentieth anniversary of the UK's first multi channel cochlear implant, which was given to a toddler deafened by meningitis. We go along to meet that little boy, Michael Batt, who is now a 23-year-old man. We see how much implants have changed in the last twenty years and find out how Michael's mum struggled to raise money and support for an operation previously unavailable in the UK. We'll also be catching up with 27-year-old Thea Kyle who had her cochlear implant operation in adulthood. We followed Thea through the stresses and strains of her operation, and we were there when she heard the sound of her voice for the first time. Eighteen months later we visit her again to find out what impact the implant has had on her life.
