Screen adaptation of Tom Stoppard's comic stageplay, which brings the minor characters of Shakespeare's Hamlet into the spotlight as they wander into adventure around the royal castle. Summoned to Elsinore to insinuate themselves with Prince Hamlet, his boyhood friends find themselves caught between the 'mad' young man, his murderous uncle Claudius and a band of travelling players. This adaptation, directed by the author, won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1990.
