Louise Fryer introduces a recital from Manchester's Bridgewater Hall as part of the 2008 Messiaen centenary celebrations, with pianists Peter Donohoe and Martin Roscoe performing the composer's first great religious piano cycle, from 1942. Messiaen gave the first performance himself, with the gifted student 19-year-old Yvonne Loriod - his future second wife - in front of a strictly invited audience in occupied Paris.
