Penny Gore presents part of a series of concerts in which the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment perform some of Mendelssohn's best-loved chamber music for wind and strings at St George's, Bristol, as part of BBC Radio 3's Mendelssohn anniversary celebrations. The programme features Weber's Quintet in B flat which, according to OAE principal clarinettist Antony Pay, was the piece Brahms chose to hear in preference to his own rather darker quintet when he was ill and needed cheering up. Plus Mendelssohn's Quintet for strings, written just a year after the Octet, when the composer was just 17. Antony Pay (clarinet) Kati Debretzeni, Cathy Weiss (violins) Jan Schlapp, Martin Kelly (violas) Robin Michael (cello) Weber: Quintet in B flat for clarinet, two violins, viola and cello, Op 34 Mendelssohn: String Quintet No 1 in A for two violins, two violas and cello, Op 18.
