The first in a three-week series of lunchtime concerts given in London churches by current Radio 3 New Generation Artists, as part of this year's City of London Festival. Today the young and much acclaimed Finnish quartet Meta4 in a programme marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of Schumann, with a performance of his String Quartet no 3. There is also the world premiere of a work written for the Meta4 by the Brazilian composer Felipe Salles, whose work fuses jazz with the music of his native land. Shostakovich wrote many quartets and today we hear his 7th, in F sharp minor, written in memory of the composer's first wife. The venue for the concert is the exotically named church of St Vedast Alias Foster, rebuilt by Wren after the Great Fire of London. Presented by Louise Fryer.
