The original 1975 outing for John Mortimer's top TV barrister, Horace Rumpole. Rumpole is well known to the hacks at the Old Bailey and is the sort that calls the judge 'Old Darling', but never his wife, aka She Who Must Be Obeyed. He defends a case of assault, touching on themes of race, police corruption, literacy and his own considerable powers of persuasion.
