St Giles' Church, in London's Barbican, is one of only a few such places in this country which can boast two complete and well-equipped organs in the same building - unlike some Continental countries, especially France, where it's much more common. In this live Performance on 3, the BBC Singers and David Hill explore some of the sacred repertoire which makes use of these musical resources - including two splendidly exuberant settings of the mass by French composers, Arvo Part's setting of a plainsong hymn, and the first performance of a new piece by BBC Singers' new Associate Composer, Gabriel Jackson. In addition, solo works for two organs by two 20th-century masters of the instrument, and motets for double choir. Presented by Petroc Trelawny. C-M Widor: Surrexit a mortuis (op 23/3) John Tavener: Two Hymns to the Mother of God Jean Langlais: Esquisses Gothiques no 3 Jean Langlais: Messe Solennelle Gabriel Jackson: He maketh his angels spirits (BBC commission, world premiere) Petr Eben: Mutationes, final movement Arvo Part: Statuit ei Dominus Bob Chilcott: Into God's Call Thierry Escaich: Grande Messe solennelle Stephen Disley and Iain Farrington organs BBC Singers David Hill conductor.
