Presented by Catherine Bott The BBC Philharmonic opens this live concert with Britten's atmospheric interludes from his Suffolk-based opera Peter Grimes: pieces which encompass all the drama of the sea, from dawn to dusk as well as a tremendous storm. Louis Lortie joins them for Ravel's left-hand concerto masterpiece, written originally for the pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who commissioned several innovative one-handed works after losing an arm in the First World War. To end the concert, one of the most descriptive pieces of romantic music ever written, the Symphonie fantastique, depicting Berlioz's journey from falling in love to rejection in five movements - a series of opium-induced visions of his beloved.
