Presented by Martin Handley. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in works centring on the city of Vienna, from 1900 to 1935. The programme features works by Schoenberg and Zemlinsky, who were were close friends: Schoenberg composed his seminal piece Verklarte Nacht in 1899 while on holiday with Zemlinsky and Zemlinsky's sister Mathilde, who became Schoenberg's first wife in 1906. Based on a series of love poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, Zemlinsky's work was originally written for string sextet and he then arranged it for string orchestra some years later. Both pieces express the same sense of yearning common to much of the art of the time.
