Martin Handley presents the opening concert of the London Jazz Festival 2008. The programme celebrates the jazz voice and marks a series of anniversaries from the world of jazz, with vocal stars and trailblazers reinterpreting classic songs accompanied by the specially created London Jazz Festival Orchestra directed by Guy Barker. With music from Irving Berlin (born 1888), George Gershwin (born 1898), Lionel Hampton and Louis Jordan (both born in 1908) as well as a celebration of the birthdays of Burt Bacharach and Quincy Jones. Vocal contributions are from Carleen Anderson, Christine Tobin, Cleveland Watkiss, Liane Carroll, Madeleine Bell, Nigel Kennedy, Melody Gardot and Nate James.
