Presented by Petroc Trelawny. Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra open their nine-month exploration of the music and art of Vienna around the year 1900 - titled Vienna: City of Dreams - with a performance of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder. A romantic oratorio inspired by the music of Wagner and Mahler, Gurrelieder is scored for soloists, narrator, chorus and orchestra, and was completed in 1910 after ten years' work. It tells the story of the 12th-century King Waldemar of Denmark, who lives in the castle of Gurre on the Danish coast, and how his love for a young maiden called Tove leads to disaster.
