Presented by Martin Handley. From the Royal Festival Hall. A semi-staged performance of Berg's operatic tour-de-force, Wozzeck, with live video by Jean-Baptiste Barriere, concludes Esa-Pekka Salonen's exploration of the music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935. A chilling and dramatic masterpiece, the work is the apex of Viennese musical Expressionism. It draws on Berg's own experiences of the First World War and charts the eponymous hero's desperate descent into paranoia and insanity, using an intensely complex series of musical forms to express everything that the characters themselves cannot.
