Presented by Petroc Trelawny. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Ilan Volkov perform works by two very different composers who both have sought religious motivation for their music. Bruckner dedicated his Ninth Symphony 'to the beloved God', while Jonathan Harvey takes his inspiration for Speakings from Buddhism. Regarded as one of the world's finest composers using traditional instruments with live electronics, Harvey combines orchestral writing with computer technology in this work, the third in his trilogy referring to the Buddhist purification of body, mind and speech.
