Presented by Jim Naughtie Live from City Halls Glasgow Driving rhythms and passionate lyricism combine to make Walton's First Symphony one of the greatest of British symphonic works. It's a piece that the BBC SSO has performed many times since the orchestra first broadcast on the 3rd December 1935. Nicola Benedetti's association with the orchestra goes back to her triumph in 2004's BBC Young Musician of the Year, and she is a welcome birthday guest in one of the greatest of all violin concertos. No celebration of the orchestra's first 75 years would be complete without new music by one of the brilliant young generation of Scottish composers and Helen Grime's new piece was specially commissioned for this concert.
