Introduced by Petroc Trelawny. James MacMillan, the BBC Philharmonic's Composer/Conductor, conducts the world premiere of three interludes from his new opera The Sacrifice, a work based on a medieval Welsh tale and focusing on issues of love and conflict. The programme also includes a work by Messiaen celebrating the Resurrection and evoking the landscapes of the Alps, and Kancheli's Fifth Symphony, written 30 years ago. It features a child-like theme on the harpsichord, representing youthful optimism, which is graphically overpowered by orchestral forces.
