Petroc Trelawny introduces a concert by Colin Currie (percussion) and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop, given at the Royal Festival Hall in London. With the composition of The Rite of Spring, Stravinsky shocked the world with his innovative use of rhythm and orchestration, and his music still makes an impact nearly 100 years later. Also on the programme is a work by a composer who looked backwards rather than forwards for inspiration, Vaughan Williams, and his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. And we come right up to date with the European premiere of American composer Jennifer Higdon's Percussion Concerto, with Colin Currie as soloist. Vaughan Williams: Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Higdon: Percussion Concerto (European première) Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring.
