Verdi's dark score forms the background for one of his most commanding operas on many of his favourite themes: the people pitted against the aristocratic few; power and politics; illegitimacy and forbidden love. All of these are in play as the Plebeian Doge of 14th Century Genoa struggles against his Patrician bitter rival. Plácido Domingo takes on one of the great baritone roles of the repertoire, Simon Boccanegra, and bass James Morris plays his nemesis, Jacopo Fiesco. Presented by Margaret Juntwait with guest commentator Ira Siff. Including backstage interviews and the famous Met Quiz during the intervals. Simon Boccanegra: Plácido Domingo (baritone) Amelia: Adrianne Pieczonka (soprano) Gabriele Adorno: Marcello Giordano (tenor) Jacopo Fiesco: James Morris (bass) Paolo Albiani: Nicola Alaimo (bass) Pietro: Richard Bernstein (baritone) Maidservant: Joyce El-Khoury (soprano) Chorus and Orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera, New York James Levine (conductor).
