In an Opera North performance given at the Grand Theatre in Leeds, John Fulljames directs Gounod's opera based on Shakespeare's tragic love story, with rising stars Leonardo Capalbo as Romeo and Slovenian soprano Bernarda Bobro in her British debut as Juliette. When Rome and Juliette meet at a party in Verona, they instantly fall in love with each other and marry in secret shortly after. They soon face separation after Romeo is banished from the kingdom and when Juliette is told by her parents she must marry another man, she takes action with tragic consequences.
