Night Waves - International Review

Anne McElvoy hosts Night Waves International Review, with critics in studios across the world joining together to discuss the latest arts events and topical cultural issues that have a global impact. Anne is joined by the Ghanaian novelist and architect Lesley Lokko, down the line from Johannesburg. The Indian historian Sunil Khilnani is in Berlin. The Argentinian writer Uki Goni reports from Buenos Aires. And the Spanish critic Maria Delgado is with Anne in London. They discuss The Elephant's Journey by the Nobel Prize-winning Portugese writer Jose Saramago, whose death was announced last month. Saramago's latest novel, written in his mid-eighties, imagines the journey actually undertaken by an elephant in the sixteenth century from Lisbon to Vienna - a gift from the King of Portugal to the Archduke of Austria. (Published by Harvill and Secker in August) They review the Argentinian crime thriller The Secret in their Eyes (cert 18), which won best foreign film at this year's Academy Awards (Released in UK cinemas on 13 August) And with the BBC Proms about to start, the panel discuss how western classical music is regarded outside the West.
