Philip Dodd talks to the maverick biologist and businessman Craig Venter, one of the key scientists in the race to sequence the human genome. In the 1990s, Venter's commercial research went head-to-head with government-funded scientists who were doing similar work for no profit, and the bitter rivalry was only partly resolved by the intervention of President Clinton. Venter talks about his autobiography A Life Decoded and his current project to create artificial life.
