With the Bank of England warning of a white collar jobs implosion, social workers under fire and plans to 'liberalise' the legal system, the professions appear to be under attack. But are the traditional professional classes a closed-shop relic of a bygone age, or are they bastions of integrity and expertise whose independence and status should be respected?
