Over the May Bank Holiday weekend 6 Music is celebrating the die hard fans of rock 'n' roll, from Goths to Mods, Punks and Ravers. Today is Goth Day and the film director and former Goth Jeanie Finlay joins Nemone. She's talking about Goth Cruise The Movie, her feature length "gothumentary" about the enduring allure of Goth culture in the UK and USA. Jeanie grew up in North East England in the 1980s, within spitting distance of Whitby where Dracula first set foot on English soil in Bram Stoker's novel. Here there were pretty much two choices of tribe available to her: Goth or not. As an artist and documentarian, Jeanie was able to pursue this curiosity as she set out to make a film about older Goths. When she found The Goth Cruise - an annual vacation taken by American Goths to the sunshine of the Caribbean, on a fabulously luxurious cruise ship, she knew she had found the paradoxically perfect environment to make a film about Goth sub-culture. The IFC commissioned her feature documentary and before she knew it she was packed off for a sojourn to the sunshine with 150 'people in black'.
