The government is coming under fresh pressure to compensate the 1.1m people who are still worse off, after the abolition of the 10p tax rate. Earlier this month the Chancellor Alistair Darling announced changes to the personal allowance in a bid to defuse the row. He raised the amount people can earn before paying tax to over £6000.
