Quentin Cooper explores the latest research into the unusual sexual habits of the malaria parasite, which could reveal new ways of tackling the disease. Research is showing that the parasite can change its sexual behaviour to choose between the number of male and female offspring it has while living in its host. This makes it a far more efficient infector of mosquitoes, which in turn can pass the disease on to more humans.
