Wolves travelled to Liverpool, having lost to an injury-time Sami Hyypia goal on their only previous Premier League visit to Anfield. Stoke visited Manchester City, hoping not to be on the wrong end of a Robinho hat-trick, a fate that befell them last season. Everton were looking for their fifth consecutive victory over Sunderland while West Ham hosted Portsmouth, having won 4-1 at Fratton Park when the sides met on Boxing Day last year. The day's other two games were north west derbies, with Burnley and Bolton meeting at Turf Moor and Wigan and Blackburn going head-to-head at the DW Stadium.
