Manchester City hosted Chelsea, hoping their expensively-assembled team could end the Blues' run of eight consecutive wins against them. Champions Manchester United visited West Ham - Sir Alex Ferguson's men did the double over the Hammers last season but have come a cropper three times in the last six meetings with the east London side. Elsewhere, Liverpool were at Blackburn, against whom they scored seven times in the league last season, Aston Villa faced a visit from Hull, Birmingham travelled to Wigan, and Arsenal welcomed Stoke to the Emirates Stadium. Also Portsmouth and Burnley met in their first top flight match for 50 years, while Wolves played Bolton at Molineux.
