It marked a return to Wearside for current Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, who spent three seasons in charge of Sunderland from 2003 to 2006. He led the North-East club to promotion back to the Premier League in 2005 as the winners of the Championship, a feat he also achieved with Wolves last season. Sunderland have never lost to Wolves at the Stadium of Light. In fact, it has been 16 years since Wolves last tasted league success away to the Black Cats, with Geoff Thomas and Mike Small scoring in a 2-0 win at Roker Park.
