Frank Renton presents recordings proving that in the right hands, brass bands playing arrangements from the jazz and big band world can really work. Providing the evidence are The Reg Vardy Band with Mark Nightingale, The Brass Band of Battle Creek with a Dave Brubeck gem, Fine Arts Brass play the New Orleans favourite Tiger Rag and we hear Adrian Drover's swaying arrangement of The Girl From Ipanema and the swing classic Skyliner. At the heart of most jazz concerts stands the ballad and the central piece of evidence tonight for brass bands crossing the divide comes from the flugel of Martin Winter in his spellbinding version of Thad Jones' A Child is Born recorded with The Eikhanger Bjorsvik Band.
