A second chance to hear performances by Django Bates' Beloved Bird and Polar Bear, presented by Jez Nelson. Beloved Bird perform new interpretations of music by Bates' hero, the pioneering saxophonist Charlie Parker. Classics such as Now's The Time and Moose the Mooche will be re-arranged and de-constructed resulting in various levels of recognizability. Featuring Petter Eldh on bass and Peter Bruun on drums, this is the first time Bates has toured with an acoustic piano trio in many years. Known for their genre-bending approach to music, Polar Bear draw on everything from hip hop to metal, but have their roots firmly in jazz. The band's 2005 album Held on the Tips of Fingers was a Mercury Music Prize Album of the Year, and recent fourth record Peepers is possibly their strongest to date, with typically off kilter grooves and joyful twisting tunes. Recorded at Islington's The Garage, drummer and composer Sebastian Rochford is joined by Leafcutter John on guitar and electronics, tenor saxophonists Pete Wareham and Mark Lockheart and Tom Herbert on double bass. Presenter: Jez Nelson Producers: Kathryn Willgress & Rebecca Aitchison.
