Jez Nelson presents maverick saxophonist, composer, improviser and producer John Zorn recorded in concert at the 2008 Willisau Festival in Switzerland. Since the early 1980s, Zorn has created music that consistently defies categorisation, from work with hardcore jazz-punk band Naked City to his highly prolific quartet Masada, which explores his Jewish heritage. Zorn has also written several independent film scores and runs record label Tzadik, dedicated to promoting underground experimental music. Born and raised in Queens, New York City, Zorn was exposed to a broad range of musical styles from an early age. After hearing Anthony Braxton's solo album For Alto at college, Zorn took up the saxophone and at the same time began composing his own works, including the unique 'game pieces', based on the structural rules of sports.
