Jazz on 3 - Charlie Haden Quartet West - London Jazz Festival 2007

Jez Nelson presents highlights of Charlie Haden's Quartet West performing at the 2007 London Jazz Festival. The band played to a sell-out opening-night crowd at the Southbank's Queen Elizabeth Hall as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the group's birth. Saxophonist Ernie Watts, pianist Alan Broadbent and drummer Rodney Green completed the outfit. There is also an opportunity to hear Haden in conversation after his performance. Haden rose to prominence as a regular bassist with Ornette Coleman, playing on the saxophonist's landmark 1959 album The Shape Of Jazz To Come. He went on to explore free jazz and politically-charged improvisation as leader of the Liberation Music Orchestra in the 1970s. During an illustrious career he has played with Keith Jarrett, Paul Motian, Dewey Redman and later, Pat Metheny.
