Jez Nelson presents a concert given by New York double-bassist Ben Allison and Man Size Safe during the 2008 London Jazz Festival. Allison describes the band as his 'rock group', and their music combines memorable melodies, the influence of American rock and folk, avant-jazz and intricate ensemble writing. It features a cast of New York's most notable players - trumpeter Ron Horton, guitarist Steve Cardenas, drummer Michael Sarin and saxophonist Michael Blake. Born in New Haven in 1966, Allison was named 'Bassist of the Year' in the 2006 Downbeat Readers' Poll, and is a regular feature of the magazine's Critics' Awards categories, including 'Bassist of the Year', 'Composer of the Year' and 'Jazz Artist of the Year'.
