Jazz Line-Up - Blue Note Records 70th Anniversary

Claire Martin is joined by writer and broadcaster Kevin LeGendre to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. Established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, with Francis Wolff becoming involved shortly afterwards, it derives its name from the characteristic 'blue notes' of jazz and the blues. Since its creation, Blue Note has become one of the most prolific jazz labels in the world, and it helped launch the careers of greats including pioneering pianist Thelonius Monk, saxophonist Eric Dolphy, trumpeter Lee Morgan and composer/pianist Herbie Hancock amongst many others. The music featured on the programme includes Blue Note's first hit record - a version of Gershwin's Summertime performed by saxophonist Sidney Bechet.
