Lester Young Alyn Shipton talks to Dave Gelly, author of a new biography of Lester Young, to select the key recordings by this distinctive and influential saxophonist. Born into a New Orleans family with its own band, Young went on to be a star soloist with Count Basie and a bandleader in his own right. His light, airy tenor sound and relaxed melodic solos were a huge influence on later saxophonists from Charlie Parker to Stan Getz.
