After six years as chief executive at the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Bridget Warr will step down in March 2010. She took over at a difficult time: the organisation was seeking a break-even budget and there were still considerable rumblings after radical changes to the training regime, which has seen the closing of many of the Association's residential training centres and a move towards training at home or in temporary settings such as hotels. Peter White looks back at Bridget Warr's time in the post and discusses with her the economics of running a charity in these testing times, and whether the time has come for some of the organisations working with blind and partially-sighted people to pool their resources and work together more, and maybe even merge.
