He was also the keeper of wry and self-deprecating diaries which detailed his turbulent years in Tony Blair and Gordon Brown's governments. As Labour battles to reposition itself and reclaim the trust of the British public, Stephen Sackur asks him what it will take to reinvigorate the party and democracy.
