The Darfur peace talks have so far failed to produce a breakthrough. The main Darfur rebel leaders have stayed away and reports of violence involving the Sudanese military continue to filter out of western Sudan, despite another Khartoum ceasefire. The UN Special Envoy for Darfur, Jan Eliasson, is trying to broker a peace deal before the scheduled arrival of more than 20,000 peacekeepers in Darfur next year. Stephen Sackur asks if the international community's strategy has backfired.
