Jake Humphrey presents coverage of qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix from Shanghai. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton topped qualifying in both of his two previous visits to China, but enjoyed mixed fortunes in the race proper. In 2007 the Briton was in pole position, not just for the race itself but for the overall championship, but ended up in a gravel trap after sliding off the track on his way into the pit lane. That allowed Kimi Raikkonen victory, and the Finn went on to clinch the world title in dramatic style a fortnight later. In 2008, however, it was Hamilton who enjoyed the last laugh, winning in Shanghai and going on to claim his maiden title in the following race.
