Das Boot

Powerful tale of submarine warfare based on the semi-autobiographical novel Das Boot by Lothar-Guenther Buchheim. One of Germany's most expensive films, it follows the perilous voyage of a German U-boat from La Rochelle in occupied France to Spain and back in 1941. The fear and claustrophobia involved in life beneath the sea is realistically recreated, while the sentiment is decidedly anti-Nazi.
