James Jolly introduces great Mozart recordings and talks with his guest Sir John Eliot Gardiner. As well as pioneering the use of original instruments in historically-informed performances of Mozart's music, Gardiner has conducted many Mozart productions in opera houses using modern instruments. He reflects on the changes in approach to performing Mozart's music, especially in the opera house, the particular challenges of dramatic pacing in Mozart's operas, and the similarities and differences in approach between conducting Mozart's operas and his concert music. 2 German Dances, K605* [and the slightly dubious 'Sleigh Ride'] Vienna Mozart Ensemble, Willi Boskovsky (conductor) From the PHILIPS complete edition John Eliot Gardiner interview Overture to The Magic Flute, K620 The English Baroque Soloists Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor) Archiv 449 166-2 Requiem and Kyrie from Requiem, K626 Barbara Bonney (soprano) Monteverdi Choir The English Baroque Soloists Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor) Philips 420 197-2 Finale of Piano Concerto no.22 in E flat, K482 Malcolm Bilson (fortepiano) The English Baroque Soloists Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor) Archiv 423 595-2 'Fuor del mar' from Act 2 of Idomeneo Anthony Rolfe Johnson (Idomeneo) The English Baroque Soloists Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor) Archiv 431 674-2 'Soave sia il vento' from Act 1 of Così fan tutte The English Baroque Soloists Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor) Amanda Roocroft (Fiordiligi) Rosa Mannion (Dorabella) Carlos Feller (Don Alfonso) Archiv 437 829-2 Sehnsucht nach dem Frühlinge, K596 Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (soprano), Gerald Moore (piano) EMI 353226-2 Im Frühlingsanfang, K597 John Mark Ainsley (tenor), Roger Vignoles (piano) HYPERION CDA 66989 Das Kinderspiel, K598 Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Ulrich Eisenlohr (piano) NAXOS 8.557900-2 Piano Quartet in G minor, K.478 Paul Lewis (piano), Leopold String Trio HYPERION CDA 673737 Clarinet Concerto in A, K622* Bernard Walton (clarinet), Philharmonia Orchestra, Herbert Von Karajan (conductor) TESTAMENT SBT 1381 Violin Sonata in F, K30 Blandine Verlet (violin), Gerard Poulet (harpsichord) From the PHILIPS complete edition Symphony No 38 in D, K504 (Prague) Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Igor Markevitch (conductor) DG 474 400-2.
