Case Notes - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Dr Mark Porter explores the science behind the dramatic cut in the number of cot deaths. He hears about a study in Bradford which is looking at the differences between how South Asian and European families look after their newborns, as the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is generally lower in families of South Asian origin. A large study in the south west of England has confirmed risk factors including exposure to tobacco smoke and front-sleeping, though others, like co-sleeping, are less clear-cut.
