From the Oxford English Dictionary: cross-fade: to 'fade in' one sound or picture while 'fading out' another. This 'Between the Ears' charts a journey in sound through the UK, moving from west to east, and north to south, in a series of long, very slow and sometimes almost imperceptible fades from one location to another. This is a journey in sound alone - a journey without a presenter, interviews, or script. At the heart of the programme are location recordings and sound-scapes from a wide range of places across the country - from the morning boats in a Devon harbour to an evening on the seafront in Skegness, via the daytime streets and quads of Oxford and a street parade in Spalding, to the sounds of rural Scotland and urban Lancashire. The journey follows a simple pattern, which listeners are invited to puzzle out for themselves. Producers: John Goudie and Alan Dein.
