Beechgrove Garden - 2010 - Episode 8

Carole has her thigh waders on and is up to her middle in our big puddle of a pond at Beechgrove. She discovers a new way of draining the pond and attacks the blanketweed while delighting in the marsh marigolds and other pretty pond favourites which are all starting to strut their colourful stuff. Meanwhile George takes a look at the family orchard, finding out if they have managed to put the new net down quickly enough to stop the bullfinches eating the fruit buds. George is also seeing off the gooseberry sawfly that is munching its way through the fruit. Jim is out and about this week and starts off with a visit to Margo and Jim Wilkie on Mull who have a garden with very shallow soil on bedrock and want to know what they can plant for groundcover. Jim's analysis of their situation is that their requirement is for 'a fast growing ground cover in a back garden with topography suitable for mountain goats with webbed feet'. Jim also visits Pathhead, Midlothian, to see old chum Jim Williams who is the chairman of the Scottish branch of the National Vegetable Society.
